Located 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) Northeast of San Jose in San Isidro of Perez Zeledon, it was donated by Dr. Woody Fisher to the York University of Toronto, Canada. Tropical Science Center shares administration of the reserve with this institution.
It adjoins Chirripó National Park and is part of the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor, where students of the Environmental Studies Faculty of York University perform their academic research.
The predominant life zone in Las Nubes Biological Reserve is promontane rain forest (bp-P). Large mammal species are found here, such as the jaguar (Panthera onca), chancho de monte (Tayassu tajacu), manigordo (Leopardus pardalis) and as well as bird species such as jilguero (Myadestes melanops). Also, 162 plant species have been collected, of which 52 are of interest to forestry (L. Canet, 2005).

Currently access is limited to York University and TSC authorized researchers and officials.
